Things to remember when storing your boat out of season

When storing your boat out of season, it’s important to take proper care to protect it from damage and ensure it remains in good condition until the next boating season. Here are some things to remember when storing your boat:
- Clean and dry: Thoroughly clean the boat, both inside and out, to remove any dirt, debris, or saltwater. Allow it to dry completely to prevent mould or mildew growth.
- Engine maintenance: Service the engine according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Change the oil, oil filter, and fuel filters, and add a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank to prevent fuel degradation.
- Remove valuables: Take out any valuable items from the boat, including electronics, fishing equipment, and personal belongings. This reduces the risk of theft and protects these items from potential damage.
- Drain water systems: Drain all water from the boat’s systems, such as bilges, livewells, and cooling systems, to prevent freezing or stagnant water issues.
- Battery care: If possible, remove the boat’s batteries and store them in a cool, dry place. If the batteries remain in the boat, disconnect them to prevent drainage.
- Cover: Use a boat cover. This protects the boat from the elements, including sunlight, rain, snow, and wind.
- Inflate tires: If your boat has a trailer, check the tire pressure and inflate them to the recommended level. This helps prevent flat spots and ensures the tires remain in good condition.
- Lubricate moving parts: Apply lubricant to moving parts, such as hinges, latches, and steering mechanisms. This helps prevent rust and keeps the components functioning smoothly.
- Secure the boat: Ensure the boat is properly secured, whether on a trailer or in a storage facility. Use sturdy straps or chains to prevent movement or tipping during strong winds or other external forces, we also recommend a wheel clamp.
- Check insurance coverage: Review your boat insurance policy to ensure it provides adequate coverage during storage and make any necessary updates or adjustments.
- Regular inspections: Visit the stored boat periodically to inspect for any signs of damage, leaks, or pest infestation. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage.
- Ensure your boat is locked up and secured with a wheel lock to prevent theft.
