At Sheeplands Self Storage, we do everything we can to provide a dry and secure environment for your belongings. But once your things are inside, it’s over to you! Here’s how to keep your container dry, your possessions safe!

What Causes Moisture in a Container?

Have you ever wondered why your hair goes frizzy some days? Moisture is in the air every day, that is part of nature.

  • Even with our dry, sealed containers, moisture can creep in if the wrong things go into storage. Common culprits include:
  • Damp or wet items – Garden tools, washing machines, tents or clothes with even a little residual moisture can cause condensation.
  • Cardboard boxes – Especially if stored directly on the floor, cardboard can absorb moisture and grow mould over time.
  • Unwashed textiles – Clothes, bedding, or curtains with body oils, sweat or food residue attract damp and mildew.
  • Plants or soil – These naturally release moisture into the air and should never be stored inside.
  • Fridges & freezers – If not fully defrosted and dried, these can introduce moisture and even mould.
  • Paint, fuel or chemicals – Not only are these items risky, they often release vapours that can cause condensation or damage.

How to Keep Things Dry

You’ve picked the right storage site – now here’s what you can do to keep your unit dry:

  • Dry everything thoroughly before storing – that includes washing machines, garden tools and soft furnishings.
  • Leave space around the walls – allow air to circulate to prevent stale air pockets.
  • Use our absorpoles – we gift you your first ones on move in!
  • Store off the ground – use pallets or shelving to raise items and keep airflow moving.
  • Don’t overpack – squeezing too much in restricts air flow and increases the chance of damp.
  • Visit regularly but try to avoid wet days – open the door to air things out.
  • Store all textiles in clear stackable plastic boxes – not only can you see what you’ve got but you can keep things dry.

What Not to Store

Here is a quick reminder of things that should never be stored in your unit:

  • Perishable food or pet food
  • Anything alive (including plants!)
  • Wet or dirty clothes and bedding
  • Paints, fuels, or other flammable liquids
  • Strong-smelling items like fertilisers or cleaning products

Pack smart, keep things dry, and if in doubt… ask us! We’re always happy to advise on best storage practices.

BONUS TIP: If you put little pots of washing powder in the container it makes it smell nice but it also catches any extra moisture!
