Self storage might seem like a straightforward service — a secure space to keep your things, right? But there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye! Whether you’re a long-time customer or just starting to consider using storage, here are some facts you might not know about the world of self storage.
1. Self Storage Isn’t Just for People Moving House
While moving is one of the most common reasons people use storage, it’s far from the only one. People use storage for:
Renovations and redecorating
Decluttering
Running a business
Seasonal items (like garden furniture or holiday décor)
Life changes like separation, downsizing, or bereavement
- Collections
It’s a flexible solution for all sorts of moments in life.
2. The Self Storage Industry Is Booming
There are over 2,000 self storage facilities in the UK, and the industry continues to grow every year. Why? Because people are realising how helpful it is to have a bit of extra space when life gets busy or unpredictable.
3. Most Customers Keep Their Units for Longer Than You’d Think
Many people imagine storage as a short-term fix, but the average customer keeps their unit for around 9–12 months. Some stay even longer! Once people realise how useful it is, it often becomes part of their everyday routine.
4. Tradespeople Are Big Fans of Storage
Tool theft is a huge issue in the UK — with over £1 million worth of tools stolen every day. That’s why more and more tradesmen are using secure storage units to keep their tools safe overnight, rather than leaving them in vans or on-site.
5. It’s Not Just for Big Loads
You don’t need to have a house full of furniture to benefit from storage. Many of our customers store just a few boxes, a set of golf clubs, stock for a small business, or sentimental items they’re not ready to part with.
6. It’s More Flexible Than You Might Think
At Sheeplands Self Storage, we offer short notice periods (just two weeks!) and the ability to add or reduce units whenever you need. No long-term contracts, no fuss — just storage that works around your life.
7. A Storage Unit Can Help You Stay Organised
Many people find that putting things into storage helps them feel calmer and more in control — especially when juggling family, work, and home life. Out of sight doesn’t have to mean out of mind — it can mean more space and less stress.

Sheeplands Storage overall, from my experience of using storage places in various locations, is a very well kept facility, from a location/access point of view. Its a very secure facility (well monitored) with broad roads for access in and out. The first month discount really helps if your storage needs are short term. With regards to the members of staff and contacting Sheeplands, I have never had any problems speaking to a member of staff during office hours. Moreover the staff are generally helpful and try their best to resolve issues logically. I would like to mention 3 names in particular in this context: Harleen, Sophie and Mandy. I have had the most interaction with Harleen with regards to help with a one off exceptional entry/exit facilitation. Booking and reservation of a second container, and also planning for emptying one of the containers at shorter notice due to my own health challenges. Harleen dealt with all of these challenges in as professional a manner as possible, with applying sympathetic common sense approach, which in my view always provides long term benefit to all parties concerned. I am sincerly grateful for Harleen's help and her ability to resolve challenges with clear communication and updates. I would like to conclude by saying that Sheeplands seem to harnessed a very positive working culture with good human interface. Well done and Thank You.Posted on Google Luke FrostTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really good service! Would recommend
