Summer House Moves

Why Self Storage Makes Moving Easier

Share this post:

Summer is one of the most popular times to move house – longer days, better weather, school holidays, and (in theory) fewer delays. In reality, summer moves can still be hectic, hot, and surprisingly pressured.

Whether you are upsizing, downsizing, or relocating locally, self storage can be the difference between a smooth summer move and a very sweaty one.

Why So Many People Move in Summer

Summer house moves are common for good reason:

  • More daylight for packing and moving

  • Easier logistics for families during school holidays

  • Better weather for removals

  • A natural time for fresh starts

But popularity also brings competition – removals are booked up, dates shift, and timelines can tighten quickly.

When Timings Don’t Quite Line Up

Chains still wobble in summer. Completion dates can move, keys can be delayed, and temporary accommodation is sometimes unavoidable.

Short-term self storage gives you flexibility when plans change. Instead of rushing decisions or cramming everything into a smaller space, you can store belongings securely until your new home is ready.

Declutter Before the Big Day

Summer is the perfect time to declutter before a move. Lighter evenings make it easier to sort through cupboards, garages, and sheds, and storage allows you to move items out gradually rather than all at once.

By storing non-essentials early, moving day becomes quicker, calmer, and far less chaotic.

Keep Moving Day Cooler and Calmer

Moving in warm weather is tiring enough without navigating overfilled rooms and tight access. Using self storage means:

  • Faster removals

  • Clearer walkways

  • Less risk of damage

  • Easier access for movers

It also means you can unpack at your own pace, rather than racing to beat the heat.

Summer Storage Tips for Students

A practical guide to not losing your mind (or your belongings) over the holidays

Share this post:

Summer should be relaxing. But if you’ve ever tried to cram a year’s worth of uni life into a spare bedroom, you’ll know it rarely is.

Whether you’re a student trying to save on rent over summer, or a parent whose hallway has become a graveyard of IKEA bags and box files, storage can genuinely change the game.

Here’s what we’ve learnt from years of helping students (and their very patient families) at Sheeplands.

Start smaller than you think

Most students are surprised by how little space they actually need. A 15sqft or 25sqft indoor room will comfortably hold the contents of a student bedroom — boxes, bedding, a lamp, the bits you’d rather not leave in a shared house. You don’t need to store everything, just the things you don’t want to haul home or leave behind.

Box things up properly

It sounds obvious, but proper packing makes a real difference. Use sturdy boxes, label everything clearly, and keep heavier items at the bottom. If you’re storing for a few months, add a couple of silica gel packets to boxes containing electronics or anything that doesn’t like damp.

Don’t forget the bike

Bikes are one of the most commonly stored items we see from students. Rather than leaving it locked up outside your house all summer (or trying to get it on the train), it can live safely with us until September.

Book early if you’re moving out in June

June is our busiest time for student enquiries. If you know you’ll need a unit, it’s worth getting in touch early to make sure we have the right size available.

We’re based at Sheeplands Farm in Wargrave, which puts us within easy reach of Reading, Henley, Maidenhead, and the surrounding area. And if you need help figuring out what size unit you need, just give us a call — we’re genuinely happy to talk it through.
