Top Tips for Storing Your Goods in a Container

At Sheeplands Self Storage, we believe in making life a little easier and that includes giving you peace of mind about your stored belongings. Our containers are secure, reliable, and weather-resistant – much like a garage at home and with a few simple storage tips, your items will stay in great condition.

Here’s how you can make the most of your container, with a little expert help from us:

  1. Think Garage, Not Greenhouse

Storage containers are solid steel boxes – brilliant for security and shielding from the elements. However, like any metal structure, they can be subject to temperature changes with the seasons.

That’s why we recommend treating your container like a well-organised garage. You wouldn’t leave things in your home garage exposed to the elements – the same goes for container storage.

  1. Use the Right Packing Materials

Some simple packing choices can make all the difference:

  • Plastic storage boxes: These are sturdier than cardboard and offer added protection from moisture. Plus you will be able to easily find your belongings.
  • Vacuum-sealed bags: Great for clothes, bedding and other soft furnishings – they save space and keep items fresh.
  • Mattress and furniture covers: These guard against dust and naturally occurring condensation, especially over longer storage periods.

These materials are widely available – and we stock many of them right here at Sheeplands to make things easy for you.

  1. Keep It Breezy

Airflow is your friend. When packing your container, try to:

  • Leave a small gap between your items and the walls/ceiling
  • Avoid stacking items too tightly
  • Create space where air can circulate

This helps prevent any build-up of moisture and keeps your goods in better condition – especially over time.

  1. Absorb Poles – Small Tools, Big Help

If you’ve been with us a while, you’ll remember the absorb poles we provided when you moved in. These handy devices contain special crystals that quietly absorb excess moisture from the air – just like those little silica gel packets, but on a larger scale.

We recommend replacing them every six months to keep them working effectively. They can’t be emptied or reused, but we sell replacements and are happy to help swap them for you – just ask! Please see a video on how to use them properly here.

  1. Don’t Pack Anything Containing Moisture

It is not always obvious but if cardboard gets wet on move in day, or the lawn mower still contains grass cuttings, or your washing machine still has water in it, then humidity can occur. Do your best to make sure everything is dry before you store it.

  1. We’ve Done Our Bit – You Can Too

We’ve taken steps to mitigate against temperature fluctuations and natural humidity changes as much as possible. By following these simple tips, you’re doing your part too – and together, we can ensure your belongings stay safe, dry, and just how you left them.

And remember, we’re always here to help. Whether it’s advice, extra supplies, or a friendly chat – you’re never on your own at Sheeplands. That’s the Sheeplands Hug.
